So what exactly
is Freeze Dried Green Tripe?
Tripe is the stomach of
ruminating* animals. These animals (i.e. cattle, buffalo, sheep, deer, goats,
antelope, etc.) are classified as being four-footed, hooved, cud chewing mammals
with a stomach that consists of four chambers. The four chambers of such a stomach
are known as the rumen, reticulum, omasum and the abomasum. The food the animal
eats (i.e. grass, hay) is swallowed unchewed and passes into the rumen and reticulum
where it is then regurgitated, chewed and mixed with saliva. It is again swallowed
and then passed through the reticulum and omasum into the abomasum, where it
is then further broken down by the gastric juices, amino acids and other digestive
enzymes. Yummy! (Well, at least your dog will think so!)
Green tripe does not necessarily
refer to it's color. In this instance it refers to the fact that it has not
been touched - not cleaned, not bleached and not scalded. It's actual color
is brown, however, sometimes there will be a greenish tint due to the grass
or hay the animal had eaten.
In an article from
the July 2008 "Whole Dog Journal", written by CJ Puotinen, author
of "The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care":
{Several analyses show that
tripe’s calcium-phosphorus ratio is 1:1, which is considered ideal for
dogs. Its overall pH is slightly acidic, which aids digestion. The protein content
of raw tripe is 10 [IMGCAP(3)]percent and its fat content is about 5 percent.
Tripe contains the essential fatty acids (linoleic and linolenic) in their recommended
proportions as well as magnesium, potassium, B-complex vitamins, the amino acid
taurine, other amino acids, about 4 percent fiber, and trace amounts of other
minerals and vitamins A, C, D, and E. Green tripe is approximately 78 percent
water or moisture. The protein level of dehydrated tripe is about 21 percent.
“We were surprised
to find that tripe contains large amounts of Lactobacillus acidophilus, the
lactic acid bacteria that is the main ingredient in probiotics,” says
Voss. “Green tripe is also loaded with gastric enzymes, other gastric
‘juices,’ and amino acids. The same gastric juices that help cattle
with digestion aid the canine in digesting and efficiently utilizing food, and
the amino acids are necessary for muscular development. As a bonus, coarsely
ground tripe works like dental floss and is one of the best cleaners for a dog’s
teeth.” }
The white tripe that you
find in the grocery store has been cleaned, scalded and bleached. It has almost
no nutritional value for the canine. This tripe is usually consumed by humans
and found in dishes such as menudo**.
