THE
PROBLEM: When
a pet or other animal jumps or falls in a pool, walled lake or pond, they
have no trouble swimming for a while but, without a way out, they can
eventually drown from exhaustion brought on by panic or fatigue. Though
drownings occur by day, they occur most often at night leaving the pool
owner or lakefront resident with that cruel surprise of a dead pet or
animal floating in their pool or pond.

What size Skamper
Rramp do I need?
We suggest that the
new Super Skamper-Ramp serves for most any size pet or animal, even up
to ~ 100 kgs, and for frequent use. However, the original Skamper-Ramp,
SKR1, should only be used as it was designed, for infrequent use, and
emergency escape -- especially critter control in stock tanks, water troughs,
water reservoirs, commercial pools, and vacation homes/rentals, or infrequently
with very small animals and pets up to 45 lbs (20 kgs).
It is true that we
have had large dogs like a 120 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback and a 95 lb golden
Retriever go out on the small ramp - it becomes more vertical, and may
even crease near the rope corners, but it will still work for an emergency
escape - exactly what it was designed for.
You can bend it but
you can't actually break the rugged polypropylene plastic board or its
flexible plastic wing strips. Ideally though, the SKR1 ramp was designed
for smaller critters that can’t possibly pull themselves out, for
emergency use only.
For people with very
small animals, the larger ramp can be used as an indoor ramp up to furniture,
and it can be tucked out of sight when not in use, for pets weighing less
than 25 lbs.
Any size animal can
use the SKR3…it was primarily designed to allow frequent use by
any pet, or for larger dogs to get their hind legs on sooner and hold
up to their weight and constant use.
This size is required
if used in conjunction with a boat or dock—the extra length is necessary
to enable it to break the water’s surface.
The Super Skamper-Ramp
version, SKR3, has been redesigned as a hollow "solid" piece
for greater strength and length, and ease of assembling. It helps when
there is a greater distance to the water or the animal is larger, although
the ramp is light and supports weight because it floats and the water
is under it.
The increased length
of the Super Skamper-Ramp version allows larger animals, more shoulder
to hip length, and is much more robust than the original Skamper-Ramp.
Of course boat sterns have more variety than pools, so they often require
a bit more ingenuity to install but, where there is a will there is a
way!
But remember it is
the box end that is sturdiest and most rigid and that needs to be very
snug to the wall. Sometimes rethreading the ropes into the two holes under
our logo, increases rigidity.
For people on farms
and ranches, an original Skamper-Ramp can be anchored in livestock/horse
water troughs so that any animals that might fall in can escape, and won't
drown and pollute the water as they decay. One less chore for the busy
farmer/rancher, and peace of mind that there is good water for animals
to drink.
Also, if people don't
cover their pools for winter, but do drain them, hanging a Skamper-Ramp
into the pool makes an easy escape ramp for any animal that may get caught
during the off-season.
